Last week we had some tough competition against the Atascadero Greyhounds.  Atascadero came into this year with 5 returning starters on offense, 5 returners on defense, and 5 straight years as Pac-7 champs.  We started off with a great individual effort by Julian Haymon, who ran for a 60 yard touchdown on the first play of the game.  The defense came out and forced Atascadero to go three and out, but during the punt, the Atascadero long snapper snapped it over the punters head and we started our next series on their 15 yard line.  At that point the momentum was on our side and we were looking to go up 14-0.  However, 2 plays later we fumbled the ball and Atascadero recovered and marched down the field to tie the game, 7-7.  The rest of the first half was back and forth, but we took a 21-14 lead into halftime.  The second half was full of fumbles, penalties, and miscues.   The final score was Atascadero 33, Clovis East 21.  Nobody likes losing; however, I think we learned a lot as a team.  The players finally realize how important conditioning is, particularly this year because we have a number of players going both ways.  This football team has a lot potential and we are very excited about the rest of the season.  We will continue to get better as the year goes on and will be ready to compete for a TRAC and Valley Championship.
